PATRICIA C. ADAMS

My best days are those I venture outside of the Pentagon to visit Navy civilians at work around the world. Navy civilians represent a potpourri of occupations and areas of technical expertise, yet they have one thing in common — their support of sailors and Marines and our Navy mission.
A few of the amazing civilians I’ve been fortunate to meet: Workers in the Norfolk, Va., shipyard who showed off how they improved productivity through Lean Six Sigma. A program manager in Charleston, S.C., in charge of equipping Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles with communications systems that keep Marines and soldiers safe in Iraq. Scientists and engineers at the Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I., who develop offensive and defensive systems for the submarine fleet. And professional women at the center who balance careers as engineers with raising their children into young adults.
I am reminded of the human resources civilians whose work enables the Navy to employ such dynamic civilians. Those civilians also include police and firefighters who service Navy and Marine Corps bases around the world, and foreign national employees in England, Italy and Japan.
Adams is deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for civilian human resources.
