The new ‘normal’: Ten years after 9/11, feds navigate a different landscape

Ten years ago, there was no Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration or Office of the Director of National Intelligence. War had yet to claim the lives of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Few Americans knew of Osama bin Laden and the organization al-Qaida.

With the approach of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon near Washington and an airliner over Shanksville, Pa., federal employees reflect on how the day changed their work and lives.
