Buyouts beginning at Army

Bookmark and Share

The Army is taking its first steps  in its year-long mission to cut 8,741 civilian positions by October 2012. The Army Materiel Command today said it is offering $25,000 buyouts to 33 civilian employees in its headquarters to help it meet its mandated cuts of at least 1,223 civilian positions. Those 33 employees accepting the buyouts must leave the government by the end of September 2011, AMC said. The command wants to cut a total of 72 civilian positions from its headquarters staff, and is accepting early retirement applications to cover the rest of the cuts.

AMC spokesman Boyd Collins said the command hopes that it won’t have to resort to reductions-in-force layoffs, and that buyouts, early outs, reassignments and hiring freezes will be enough to cut its positions. A July memo from Army Secretary John McHugh said AMC will cut 1,223 positions, but Collins said that AMC expects to go further and cut 1,660 civilian positions.

This is the latest in a recent trend of federal agencies offering buyouts and early retirements to cut their ranks, largely due to ever-tightening budgets. Expect to see a lot more coming.

Your grammar is atrocious in comment section. Every time I read something like this, I shake my head. Great representation of the lack of education in some government sectors, hence the public opinion of its workers.

To find out how much buyout money they will get, employees should go to fedbens.us and click on calculator #2, which does severance pay / VSIP.

Bettina, you are right about the above comment. Wow, where did this guy get his education from. I can not believe that he has a position as a case writer. It never ceases to amaze me.

As a DOD civilian employee, the trend of budget cutting and personnel down-sizing is a bit worrisome. But I think that this notion of quality vs. quantity will help some of us step up our game and become an indisposable presence within our organizations.

They are going to cut government employees and hire them as contractors which cost twice as much.

Did somebody consider offering this BEFORE they moved a bunch of folks from HQ, AMC, Fort Belvoir, VA, and paid for their move to Huntsville, AL? If not, did we just waste a lot of taxpayer money on the ones who will take this buyout down there? I hope someone used their head and offered those folks this buyout ahead of their move.

@fayncgal; sadly no one thought that far ahead and taxpayers are left holding the bag
